It’s because of fandom I’m doing the PhD I’m doing now. So I can see the value of fandom to academic work – the vagaries of why people are attached to specific shows or characters, how those shows can influence them in particular ways, what fanfic tells us about fandom and broader culture. But I can also see the long tradition of pathologising fans that has occurred (and sometimes continues to occur) in academia.
