Christian rhetoric has shaped not only how Americans think about public health in regard to AIDS but also how normative assumptions about sexual morality drew boundaries around national citizenship in this period. In the 1980s, gay men and lesbians found themselves on the margins of moral citizenship. Yet the AIDS crisis also changed this – or at least initiated a shift.
