Perhaps, then, the line between empathy and exploitation is not so much an issue of identity but integrity, a commitment to reckoning with all sides of a story and meeting people where they are, not where we think they should be. In the end, of course, there’s really only so much we — as creators and consumers — can do about it, beyond remaining vigilant about our true motives and staying open to criticism.
