When I watch trans depictions, I am less concerned with the actor’s identity or ‘pass-ability’ than I am with authenticity: Does this trans character seem like someone I’d likely encounter in my own community? Are their actions and experiences seemingly based in reality? Or does the portrayal merely seem fabricated out of cisgender assumptions about gender and trans people?
