Q:Why do you think even with canon scenes showing Bi Dean some fans say he's not? Is it because they need a actual kissing scene or dialogue. Also why is it some fans say spn is nothing about romance but yet they deal with alot of couples on the show also Dean & Sam has been in a romantic relationship with Jess, Lisa etc.
Mostly I’d put it down to three things:
1. Heteronormativity
2. Heteronormativity &
3. Heteronormativity.
I think people are genuinely just so massively unused to seeing bisexual characters, especially male bisexual characters, and even more especially macho bisexual characters that they honestly cannot process all the clues that are given, or just write them off as laughs. To me there are parts that say to me 100% that Dean is bi, if rather deeply closeted, but others just don’t see it that way, for whatever reason. And that’s without getting into the whole subject of bisexual erasure which is a whole other can of worms. That’s why so many people, myself included, would LOVE to see Dean canonically bisexual, and in a manner that means that people can’t just ignore it or say that it is being misinterpreted. There is such a chance for the CW, & Supernatural to do something that just is not done. To have a lead, canonically queer male character for whom sexuality is just one aspect of their character & not the reason for their existence would be the most amazing thing ever and do so much to help with the problems queer people face as far as the stereotypes that are shoved down everyone’s throats are concerned.
As for the other part of your question, I honestly have no idea why people say one thing (“not about romance!”) while accepting it in a straight framework. I don’t want to say that people are homophobic, because while that may be the case for some I’m not sure it is for everyone, but I suppose it comes back to heteronormativity again. A straight relationship is so normalised in media that people don’t really notice it, it’s just something that happens. To have a queer relationship portrayed is something very, very different to what we usually see on TV, so it jars people out of their comfort zones & forces them to confront it. Which people don’t always want to do, so they fall back on the whole “it’s not what it’s about/don’t shove it in our faces” arguments. But I mean, when it comes to Supernatural one of the main themes throughout the entire series is love, in all it’s forms. I don’t see why people have a problem with romantic love being one of those forms portrayed, because it’s not like it’s suddenly going to overtake everything else in the show. It hasn’t at any other time, has it?
