Q:As a grown unschooler, what are your plans career-wise? How to you plan to provide financial stability for yourself in the future?

thestylishvelociraptor:

I’m a cook, and have worked professionally as such. I like making tasty foods, and I’m good at it.

But career, now that’s different. I think “getting a career” is kind of an outdated concept, and many people transition to doing different things throughout their lives. Financial stability is an increasingly elusive and difficult thing to manage in a straight-forward go to university then get “career” in appropriate correlating field way of doing things.

As well as being a cook, I’m a writer, I’m good with cats and dogs, I’ve dabbled in gardening, and want to maybe sell cool thrifted clothes online.

While I think it’s likely for the next handful of years that cooking will end up being the closest thing I have to a career, and what I can most reliably make money doing in some form, I expect all those above listed skills and many more that I learn and work on in the coming years will contribute to managing “financial stability,” or the closest I can get to that. I don’t plan to do just one thing throughout my life, and instead I think what I’m doing and how I’m doing it to earn money will change over time based on my needs, my desires, what I can get…

I do want to add that framing your question the way you did seems a little odd to me, in that it seems to be making an assumption that unschoolers have a harder time getting jobs or achieving financial stability. I don’t think unschooling actually is more risky than schooling (and I’ve written a whole post about unschooling and riskiness here), and to be honest I’m starting to get kind of exasperated with the assumption that it is!

Anyway, I hope this answer is helpful.
