If I were to tick off a list of my closest friends and where I’d met them, at the moment, a large percentage of that list would be people from the internet. People I met on Twitter. People I met on an ancient BBS. People I met on online dating sites. People I met through my writing and work. People I met through other people on the internet. I’ve lived with my friends from the internet, I’ve shared hotel rooms with them, I’ve gone on grand adventures with them — I drove to Arthur’s Pass to watch kea with friends from the internet, I had a pool party with friends from the internet. What I am trying to say here is that I know a lot of people from the internet, and I treat them just like any other friends precisely because they’re just that: friends.
